The Apple Tablet Will Make The “Smart Home” A Reality
You may not know this, but the iPhone is a relatively underpowered device when compared to the technology that is readily available for purchase. Lucky for Apple, consumers aren’t purchasing iPhones for their superior hardware. A consumer purchases an iPhone for its capabilities, namely its endless capabilities. Apple has successfully created an all-in-one device. The “all” being the 100,000+ apps available for download, the “one” being their one and only iPhone.
I was always told that if you want something, you have got to “make it happen.” This is Apple’s core philosophy. From software to hardware, they intend to control all aspects of their products. It’s all one big Mac experience. Without this control, they would be leaving the door open for someone to come in and screw up everything that they have worked so hard for (Android has left the door open). But enough on the App Store’s stringent acceptance policies, were here to talk about the Tablet.
The Tablet will be the next, natural step in a plan modeled after this “make it happen” philosophy. Let’s face it, Apple has stolen the portability market. They nailed it with wireless networking, laptops and the iPhone/iPod. Thanks to Apple, the computer is now completely portable (iPhone). So if the computer is already portable then why introduce a larger Tablet?
The Apple Tablet will not be concerned with making the computer portable. Apple is too smart to have their iPhone and its Tablet sibling directly compete with each other. They already have enough smartphone competitors, no need for an in-house fight. Instead, a Tablet will allow for Apple to open up a new channel of communication with the consumer. This channel of communication will deal with the home, the “Smart Home.”
The Tablet’s main concern will lie in making all aspects of your home – not just your computer – portable. By the end of the decade, Smart Homes will no longer be considered a thing of the future. Apple knows this, and they want to be the ones who will “make it happen.” Looking back, the iPad will be seen as the first, revolutionary step taken by a tech manufacturer towards making the Smart Home a reality.
Think of the iPad as one big, touch-screen remote control. The current iPhone 3GS’ hardware is more than capable of controlling your media center, computers, surveillance cameras, electrical setup (lights, AC, etc.), sprinkler system and even your car. To think that the Apple Tablet will be less powerful than an iPhone is ludicrous; it’s only natural to assume the opposite will hold true.
I am obsessed with the Sonos Wireless Entertainment System, but I worry for them. With the Apple Tablet consumers will no longer have a reason to spend $500 on a device that does something their Tablet can already do. The Apple Tablet will be the all-in-one, go-to device for such tasks.
All of this in conjunction with the various tasks tech bloggers have pinned on the future Apple Tablet (reinvent the newspaper and magazine industries, ebook reader, video player, etc.) and the Tablet will be one killer device. Similar to the iPhone, the Apple Tablet will be a hit not because of its superior hardware, but because of the endless capabilities an all-in-one device will offer consumers. It is amazing what third-party developers have been able to push out of the iPhone. It will be even more amazing to see what they can do with the Tablet. Apple wants the future Smart Home market, and with the introduction of their Tablet computer they will be in a position to “make it happen.”
